Dua Lipa sued for copyright infringement over hit song “Levitating”

American and Albanian singer Dua Lipa is being sued for copyright infringement by Bosko Kante, a music producer and songwriter who participated in the composition of Lipa’s 2020 hit song “Levitating”. If she loses this lawsuit, Lipa could be ordered to pay up to twenty million dollars.

Kante, who created a talk box track used in the original version of Lipa’s song, claims that the singer used his track in subsequent remixes of the song without his authorization. He explains that he and Lipa agreed verbally that the singer would only use the disputed track in the original recording of the song, and that he never gave his permission for his track to be used in future releases and remixes of the song. 

This is not the first time the popular singer is sued over allegations of copyright infringement, not even the second time. In fact, this is the third copyright infringement lawsuit faced by Lipa over her song “Levitating.” This ought to serve as a reminder of how important it is for amateur and professional musicians to have good written copyright license agreements (rather than verbal, trust-based only agreements) in place with their collaborators.
